above: the 'Dwarf Forest'. The Dwarf forest level is the top part of the actual rainforest and receives the most rainfall and wind. It is more often than not misty here, especially in the morning. Map of trail to Mt. Britton.

A rain forest is about rain! The wettest part of Puerto Rico, where the most rain falls, is at the very top of the Luquillo Mountains in El Yunque. This is the dwarf or elfin forest. The soil is so wet that only a few species have been able to adapt to these extreme conditions ( both water and wind). The plant life seems very exotic to us, being dwarfed or stunted and eerily beautiful. You will only be able to access the dwarf forest on the north side of #191. The actual rainforest extends below the dwarf forest, where conditions are ever so slightly less wet and less windy.

This Labrador Retriever BELOW is dwarfed by the tree ferns. This trail to the 'Las Rocas' Rocks starts behind the radio tower building near the top of the road (that is blocked off to visitors cars) It is quite a long hike to get here, you must go up above the Mount Britton Tower.
