“WHY SAY NO TO SWIMMING ”
The following information was gathered during Enchanted Island Eco Tours' study on chemical introduction to the aquatic system during swimming!
Enchanted Island became concerned about the large numbers of swimmers that were entering the bay waters of Laguna Grande in 2004. We felt the need to know if damage via body related chemicals was a real problem or not. We started to send e-mails out asking all related authorities on these type of marine ecosystems questions about our concerns, the responses were many and very detailed.
But a quote from one very knowledgeable individual that had personally experienced and studied these bays in Puerto Rico would give us our reason for saying no to swimming! Quote: . . - "You are justified in being concerned about potential pollutants to the bay. My opinion is that chemicals from people would be a smaller source of contaminants than runoff from roads, yards, crops, along with discharges from motorboat engines and other man-made items.
I think its ok to swim in Mosquito Bay (Vieques), but Laguna Grande is much more shallow and the potential to stir up the bottom by standing or kicking should be avoided. Therefore I think that swimming in Laguna Grande should not be allowed. This quote was sent by Dr. Michael I. Latz from “Scripps Institution of Oceanography University of California San Diego.
No Swimming is the right answer, it is a one of a kind experience that will never be forgotten but knowing you took the extra step to help keep it here for many others to see and enjoy is worth all the efforts that each of us can make! Thank you, for making a green choice and saying no to Swimming in Laguna Grande!
